How can I learn more about becoming a foster parent?
The first step to becoming a foster parent is to attend a foster parent orientation. We have foster parent orientations scheduled monthly or you can schedule an appointment with Sienna.

What are the minimum requirements for becoming a foster parent?
• Must be at least 21 years old
• May be married or single
• May live in a house or apartment, rent or own
• Must have a working car in good condition, driver’s license, & car insurance.
• Be employed & able to support child for first 45 days

What is the application process?

1. Attend an orientation
2. Set up a home inspection
3. Get your fingerprint clearances
4. Health screening & TB test
5. CPR/First Aid certification
6. Attend PRIDE training
7. Fill out application packet

What is PRIDE Training?
PRIDE stands for Parent Resources for Information, Development, and Education. It is a required program used to prepare and educate families that are interested in providing foster care or in becoming adoptive homes for children in the foster care system. KYJO offers PRIDE training for free.

Do I get paid for taking in a child?
Foster parents do not get paid, foster parents do get a tax-free reimbursement. Reimbursement money is to be used for the child’s food, clothing, toys, educational supplies, activities, allowance and personal hygiene items.

How do I get my home ready?
• Smoke Detectors- Bedrooms, near kitchen and living area
• Carbon monoxide detector
• First Aid Kit
• Swimming Pool- 5 ft. gate or pool cover

How long does the process take?
The process can 1-4 months, the time frame depends on how quickly the prospective parents get things done.
